My Story – Never give up on your dreams…

Donna Benjamin-Blair, the owner of Little Adults Academy & Modelling Agency started her career in modelling at the age of seventeen years. A friend of hers had enrolled onto a course that trained people in modelling and deportment and recommended it to Donna. Donna says, “That was the best investment I ever did…investing in myself. The course helped to build my confidence to be the woman that I am today”.

During her training, she won Miss Dominica 1993 when she was only 20 years of age and did various work for companies like, Afro Hair & Beauty, The Clothes Show, The Voice, D'Vine and did modelling for hair companies and sports wear.”

Donna was then employed by the training company to work in the office but she was asked to cover for the Director, to train her children’s class in modelling. Donna loved the experience but more importantly the children loved working with Donna. Donna always has a patient approach when working with children and her main goal was and still is, to get the best out of people. She says, “The most rewarding experience has been when I have transformed a shy child to be a confident one".

Donna then decided that she wanted to spread her dream so that other children could benefit from her experience. She approached the Prince's Youth Business Trust and they helped Donna to set up Little Adults in May 1997. Opening the Agency was Donna’s dream to see other children be successful in the field. Her first clients were Nickelodeon and Freemans Catalogue and the list is now endless…working for The Bill, Eastenders, Silent Witness, COI, plus many more. After much demand, she expanded her agency to promote adults in November 2004.

Donna has many strings to her bow and in 1999 decided to enrol on a photography course. She started to take the photographs of the models to help build up their portfolio. A dear friend of her brother was diagnosed with cancer and they wanted to get married, in case he passed away quickly.   Donna was asked to photograph the wedding but as she had never done a wedding previously,  Donna donated her services free of charge and paid for all the printing costs. This was another turning point for Donna and thereafter started a successful career in Wedding Photography. So far, she has worked in the U.K., New York, Jamaica, Dominica, St. Lucia and Barbados doing weddings. Donna says “I have been truly blessed to be able to deliver a service that makes people so happy.  The feeling is overwhelming".

Donna’s advice…”I was only seventeen years when I started my dream and I am still living it today by promoting children and adults. I would never have dreamt that I would get this far but I am so thankful to my friends, family, models and clients that have supported me on my journey. I am only 5.4” and at the time, thought that modelling was only for women that were over 5.9”.  There are so many avenues in modelling and acting: Background artists, fitting sessions, photo shoots and voice-overs, which do not always require you to be very tall. If this is your dream…invest in yourself and be the best that you can either by building yourself up through a training course or by having photo shoots to build up your portfolio. Always remember that there are no guarantees regardless of what work career choice you make. There is little in this life that is free but investing in your self is priceless. Good luck and best wishes"…Donna

We would like to say a BIG THANK YOU to Lawrence Beazley, who has two of his daughters joined with Little Adults. Lawrence did our Little Adults website forms. Lawrence offered his services to us and has done a fantastic job. If you have an idea or a service that you feel could be of benefit to both yourself and us, please email Donna at donna@littleadults.demon.co.uk.

If you are looking for an experienced driving instructor please read Lawrence’s story.

Based in Twickenham in West London Lawrence Beazley is a qualified driving instructor working with Red Driving School. His background is slightly different though! Lawrence was for many years a professional ballet dancer having trained at the Royal Ballet School both White Lodge and at the Upper School, he then worked with several companies including Northern Ballet Theatre, National Ballet of Portugal and London City Ballet before turning freelance with his wife Ayumi Hikasa. As a couple they guested with many companies around the world dancing the principal parts in most of the major ballets. Although his wife is still involved in teaching dance, Lawrence worked in the business sector as well as teaching science to primary school age children through science parties and workshops before using his teaching skills to get people on the road!

If you live in the Richmond/Kingston area and are wanting to learn to drive then give me a call. I'm extremely patient,  understand the vagaries of anyone involved in the arts/performing world and best of all, I can offer very competitive rates to anyone that mentions that they found out about me through Little Adults!

We interviewed one of the new models ...

Reece Omadeli

What age did you start?

I've been acting from the age of 12/13 and as for modelling I started when I  was 16.

Why did you start?

I started acting because I have a really strong interest in becoming someone else, portraying a idea or story, getting a point across, and I like being on stage and being in front of camera in general. As for modelling as I said I love being in front of the camera and I was constantly being told by my aunt who is a photographer that I had model-like features, I love taking pictures and I think the modelling industry doesn't have enough well known male models so I want to change that and I have always been confident that I can do whatever I put my mind to.

What training have you done?

I've been training in acting since secondary school and that's led on to doing a BTEC National Diploma in acting in BSix College and now City & Islington College. I've also been in a theatre company, Hardknock Productions. Aside from that I look into psychology a lot to improve my understanding of people and that leads me to play different people more naturally. As for modelling, I'm currently in two companies (one being Little Adults) and have had a photo shoot with an entertainment company and I'm always looking for tips and advice online as well as doing workshops on it and I also take better care of my body since becoming a model.

What are you doing now?

At the moment I'm studying in college and looking for work opportunities in both acting and modeling fields. I'm due to be on a TV show on sky 1 in late January called "How to get what you want" and I've also appeared as a extra in a few TV shows so look out for my face...

What's your dream?

My dream is to be a successful actor and model and to be a household name and face, I want to work in television, film and work with companies such as Armani, D&G and Calvin Klein. I want to prove ANYONE can achieve ANYTHING if they set their mind to it and devote to it.
